What are NPT Fittings?

NPT fittings, or National Pipe Taper fittings, are a type of threaded fitting used in plumbing and piping systems. These fittings have tapered threads which create a seal when tightened. NPT fittings are commonly used in applications where leaks must be prevented, such as in water, air, or gas systems. They are available in various materials such as brass, stainless steel, and plastic, and come in a wide range of sizes to accommodate different pipe diameters and thread pitches. NPT fittings are widely used in North America and some other regions, but it’s worth noting that they are not compatible with parallel threads like those found in British Standard Pipe (BSP) fittings.

In addition to the National Pipe Taper (NPT) fittings commonly used in North America, there are several other national standard pipe taper fittings used in different regions around the world. Some of these include:

BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel): Also used in the UK and other countries adhering to British standards. Unlike BSPT, BSPP fittings have parallel threads. They are sometimes referred to as G threads.

BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper): Commonly used in the United Kingdom and other countries following British standards. BSPT fittings have a taper angle of 55 degrees and are often referred to as R or Rp threads.

BSPT

JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards): Used in Japan and some other Asian countries, JIS fittings have a taper angle of 30 degrees and are similar in design to BSPT fittings.

ISO 7/1 (International Organization for Standardization): Commonly used in Europe and other regions following ISO standards. ISO 7/1 fittings have a taper angle of 55 degrees and are similar to BSPT fittings but with some differences in thread dimensions.

These are just a few examples of national standard pipe taper fittings, each with its own specifications and usage practices. It’s important to use the appropriate fittings for your specific application to ensure compatibility and functionality.
